Location: Virginia, MN
Project Type: Department of Transportation
About this Project
In early 2015, MnDOT began a design-build project to completely relocate Highway 53. This 3.1 mile project also included building a brand-new steel-girder bridge over Rouchleau Pit, the main drinking water source for the city of Virginia, Minnesota. RAM Construction Services was one of 27 local subcontractors under Kiewit, and our contract involved applying epoxy chip seal to the bridge deck to improve the structure’s surface friction and longevity.
The sidewalk work was not included in the original contract but was awarded via change order when the state realized it was in their best interest to overlay the new corresponding trail. RAM proposed a special sidewalk blend aggregate, which is less aggressive for pedestrians, but still offers enough friction for bicycle and snowmobile traffic. A darker aggregate was used on the actual bridge deck, not only for aesthetic purposes, but so UV rays would warm the deck in the winter months.
The highway was relocated in order to gain access to iron ore deposits, which exist below the original roadway. A major obstacle we encountered was lack of access to the project location. Since the new roadway had not yet been completed, getting our heavy equipment onto the bridge deck was a troublesome uncertainty. We ended up having to use front end loaders and bulldozers to push our equipment onto solid ground.
Now completed and standing over 200 feet high, The Highway 53 Bridge over Rouchleau Pit is one of the tallest bridges in Minnesota. It was an honor working on such a historic and well-executed project. Congratulations to our crew for another job well done, and a special thanks to Kiewit Infrastructure Company for their continued trust in RAM Construction Services.

"I just wanted to let you know what a pleasure it was to work with Rey and the guys on the bridge project. Rey was top notch all the way on this project with his communication and execution, which made my job so much easier knowing that things were going to get done right and on schedule. I know the school is very happy with the results as well! Thanks again for everything, and looking forward to more projects together."

"Working in the construction business you all know that the variable that truly makes or breaks a project is the team of people that is charged with working together to effectuate the plan and complete the mission at hand. Lansing’s $15 million plus “Extreme Makeover” project, completed over the past 4 years, has had the blessings and curses of working through COVID, staffing issues, material logistical challenges, etc. I wanted to take a moment to thank the leaders and the entire RAM team for making my very last project with the city extremely memorable and rewarding. They [the RAM team] were at all times respectful, helpful, collaborative, responsive and willing to go the extra mile to get the job done. I cant think of a better crew that could have made my last official project any better. Thank you for assembling, mentoring and promoting a set of individuals that could not represent your company better."

"First, I would like to give my gratitude and appreciation to RAM’s crews. RAM personnel arrived on site everyday ready to work, no matter the hours worked the day before. RAM showed a commitment to safety and quality that is among the best I have ever been around. Daily, RAM’s crews would have safety briefings and have their plans for the day reviewed. RAM’s ability to plan and communicate with my team was a huge component of the success that our project had...RAM’s crews represented the company in the highest possible capacity. Their performance on this project is the best I have experienced as a prime contractor."
- Joshua C, Project Superintendent
"Since RAM first arrived to the project site in March of 2019, [your team] has been extremely professional and considerate of the needs of the City, including all levels of the staff, the engineers and inspectors. RAM is clearly committed to schedule and quality workmanship, and maintains a crew that demonstrates these expectations as well."
- Emily S, Engineer
City of Ann Arbor
"I am glad that we made the decision to partner with your organization."
- Chris B, Project Manager
"This project was yet another example of RAM performing at a level which exceeds the requirements for a parking structure maintenance project such as this and, in many ways, at a level above most of their competitors. Keep up the high quality work!"

We were honored to help build a monument in recognition of our fallen Michigan State Troopers. Being a part of this memorial is much more than just work for us, it is about giving back to those that spent every day risking their lives for our safety.
