Book Tower Building Facade Restoration

About this Project

Location:  Detroit, Michigan
Project Type: Building Facade Restoration

The Book Tower is one of the most iconic landmarks in the Detroit skyline. Designed by architect Louis Kamper, its construction was completed in 1926. Over time, the building fell into disrepair until Bedrock purchased it in 2015, beginning an ambitious restoration effort.

In 2016, RAM Construction partnered with Bedrock to start revitalizing this historic structure. The first phase focused on cleaning the building elevations along Washington Boulevard and restoring the caryatids, the ornate maiden statues located beneath the soffit. These intricate details were carefully removed, repaired, and returned to their original condition.

The comprehensive tower restoration began in 2017. The façade was meticulously cleaned, and the terracotta elements were inspected to determine necessary replacements. This project reflects a commitment to preserving Detroit’s architectural heritage while breathing new life into a treasured landmark.
